How should i paint a bike?

i have an old racing / touring bike and i want to restore it. i have got it working. but i want to ket it looking good. i want to paint it black, but i dont know how

any help?

john

Make sure all rust is removed first and sand to get old paint smooth. Apply a base/priner coat and then paint. If you want it to look nice then maybe look into a Maaco or paint shop to do it. That should not cost that much to have them spray it. Automotive paint would hold up better and it would look a lot better as long as you have it cleaned up with all rust off of the frame.
The best advice is to do it professioally so just ask around a nd look in your phonebook
First try to remove as many as parts as you can off of the bike's frame (wheels, chain, brakes, etc.). Then get some sand paper and start to sand the frame until you get to the chrome part, but if your lazy then just try to sand it until the frame gets a rough surface and make sure that you can't feel any more of the glossiness. When you're done with that you will need some Rust-Oleum brand primer http://images.orgill.com/200x200/6124796... (YOU HAVE TO BUY THE "SPRAY" THOUGH), and spray it all over the frame. Then after about an hour or so you take your black spray paint and spray the frame, then again after an hour or so you will need a SPRAY can of gloss topcoat enamel to spray over the frame to bring back the glossiness. Now give it a few minutes to let it dry, then you can put all of the parts back on, or take it to a bike shop to put them on if you can't.
Now you have a remodeled bike!!!! HAVE FUN!!!
Hi John...

By far the best, cheapest, and least stressful way I have found is to take the frame and fork with everything removed to an independent body shop. You may even reconsider a color insofar that you can choose from thousands.

Ask them to sandblast it and repaint it for you. I have a guy that has done dozens of frames for me for $70 each... occasionally I give him a gift certificate for a pizza or something since he usually does these over a couple of days on his lunch break. Trust me when I say that the materials to do this right will exceed $70 for the typical person.

If you want detailed instructions on how to do this yourself email me at mirageguitarworks@yahoo.com and I'll be happy to send you the info. If you email through the forum I won't be able to send you all the info at once since it only allows 1000 words.

One word of caution if you decide to go the auto shop route... if there is any chrome on the frame the sandblasting will remove the chrome as well so you'll need to mask it off with at least 2 layers of plastic electrical tape and also let them know what you did.
