Does anyone think the 2007 yamaha v-star silverado 650 is enough bike for long distance touring? The 650 is designed to be an urban cruiser. This means it's great for short distances and gives good city gas mileage. The smallness of the bike/engine makes it a poorer choice for long distance riding. First, you have to keep the engine rpm's up a lot higher just to maintain highway speeds. Second, the suspension is not really going to give a comfortable ride for long distance. The V Star 1100 is almost the same but a bigger engine. I you are worried about the big cruisers being too big then the V Star1100 would be a great choice. Big enough to ride the highways and backroads with enough power, light enough for even the smaller rider to handle well. Gets good gas mileage even with a windshield and accessories on it (over 45 to the gallon as long as you keep it tuned and the carbs in sync). The price isn't that much more if you are buying new so its worth the difference. Don't let the engine size scare you. The 1100 will drive like a 650 until you twist the throttle wide open. Then, you will feel the extra power and you will run highway speeds with less throttle than you would on a 650. Also if you ever plan to take a passenger, the 650 will really bog down but the 1100 will handle it. Depends on your weight and how much weight you want to slap on that bad boy. If you're going all the way with the double saddles, tank bag, and back seat bag and you weigh over 160 lbs, I would say you should look for some more stability and more juice. At least a 750. Get the V-Star Silverado 1100 for long distance touring. You;ll be glad you did. Keep the light on, will ya? ok.... I've rode a 650 v-star... and YES it will be a great bike. don't listen to everyone who says 1100. trust me.... ok, the max speed limit is what... 75 mph?!! I know that it will do that and more. Plus, you'll be pulling down about 45-50 mpg!!! as opposed to a 1100 at 35-40mpg. And trust me.... the difference will add up. |
