Is there one bike thats good for commuting and touring? |
At this time I ride a 6 speed Huffy, girls bike. But my aunt wants me to (and I want to) ride across the U.S. with her in the year 2010. I also want to start commuting back and forth to work. So, I guess what I want is a miracle: a bike that I can commute, ride across the country, and still have fun little rides with my 10 year old. Oh, and I have arthritus in my back, so I don't think a lean over bike will work on long distances. My aunt rides an old 10-speed, and that's what she's going to take on our trip. We won't be carrying much, as my Uncle and Son will be sagging for us across the U.S. Oh, and it would be nice if I didn't have to pay half my yearly salery to buy this bike. (-; For new bike, check out Specialized Sirrus or REI. Specialized Sirrus, listed for $550. It's bombproof. The gear ratio is perfect for commuting and touring. REI also has a bike made specific for commuting which comes with rear rack, lights, fenders and internal gear. It's called Novarra Transfer and listed for $599 at rei.com. It's a little heavy when fully outfitted. If you plan to do more commuting than touring which is 3 years from now, I suggest Novarra. Or better yet, check craigslist on your local listing. Now, we are talking about recycling and reuse !!! You'll find so many good deals on older bikes like Peugeot, Schwinn, Centurion or Fuji for less than $150. Many people have them in their garages for 20 years hardly touched. Older bikes are well-built comparing to bikes they sell at big-box stores nowadays. Note that, older bikes have quill stems which can be raised high for more upright position, or you can completely swap out to riser stem if you really need be total upright. Also be sure that you pick one out with triple chainrings on the front, just in case you are in the hilly areas. Since you'll have a sag wagon on the tour, I would recommend picking a bike that fits. Your choice for that one bike is unlimited in the second hand market. Source(s): Years of commuting. I would definitely look into the Trek FX series, they start at around $430 and feature WSD (women's specific geometry) which may or may not help your back. This is an excellent bike for fitness and commuting. A "lean over" bike is still ideal for touring...would you consider a traditional road bike with a raised stem to alleviate pressure on your back? Otherwise, I would also look at the Specialized Globe and the Raleigh Passage series (which starts under $300). Good luck! |
