How do I go about Registering and Insuring a bike in the USA if I don't live there? |
I will be buying a bike in the States and touring for 3 months before bringing the bike back to Australia. Oh, wow. Four hours and nobody answered your question yet? Well, you should have insurance and there are plenty of insurance agencies around, so drop in on one in the state you're going to buy in. They'll be glad to help you. Might be better to email--you could handle this before you come. I keep forgetting about computers. You set it up, maybe pay in advance with a credit card, tell them what coverage you want, what kind of bike it is. Then when you're over here and actually buy it, you give them a phone call and tell them the make, model and serial number. The bike shop will take care of licensing the bike itself when they sell it. If you know where you're going to buy it, they may even sell insurance. Contact them. Now, why would you come to the U.S. to buy a bike? You want a Harley, right? Many insurance companies are not going to be willing to insure you without a Us drivers license and also an address. You can use your Austrailia license but you will get charged more because it is not a US license. You will have to use a friends address for the states. I would recommend trying Progressive.com. You can buy the policy online and you will need to cancel it as soon as you return to Australia. The US policy will not cover you there. you cannot |
