Why aren't touring bikes popular and there are only one or two models? It seems it would fit commuters well. I think there are a couple answers. Today, folks buy hybrids or comfort bikes, who might have previously bought the touring bike. The hybrid is more upright and is well suited for riding the bike path or even the commute. The Mfg will make what sells. Folks who do actual touring or long distance rides like brevets are buying custom bikes like Rivendell. These options are becoming more popular. I think Rivendell has a two year waiting list. The other reason is that many want to be Lance wantabes. This means a road bike frame. Look what drives the sales of clothes and other accessories. Again, these might have been buyers for touring bikes in another life. I also have never seen a big selection of touring bikes. i would assume because they are for touring. they are meant for long rides. for commuters touring bikes might be uncomfortable. also many like to ride in a more upright way, so that it is easier to see. often commuters are near traffic. and touring bikes aren't fast bikes, either. Yup, Ditto, the touring bikes are for0 long distances, able to carry heavy loads with panniers and racks and stronger frames. I dunno, it all depends on preference. Some people like to ride up, some down, and some reclined in recumbant bikes. Style - which is primarily BS. You can fight it but it takes courage. |
