Beginner motorcycles ? Help!!?

I'm getting my motocycle license and need to get a decent starter bike. I'm planning on getting a cheap bike that I can learn on for about a year and then get a better motorcycle. What is a good bike to start with? I need a bike that is highway safe and is easy to commute in. Eventually I am getting a 'touring' bike because I plan on traveling a lot with it... but this one is just for regular commuting and learning on :)

I'd recommend something around 250 cc. It's big enough to be highway capable, but small enough that the bike-to-rider weight ratio (just guessing of course) won't be so much that you won't be able to pick it up if you lay it over (in the parking lot of course - hope you never lay it over at speed!).

And while on the subject, be sure you do a lot of that "practice" riding AWAY from cars and traffic - the stats on MC accidents are skewed way towards new riders - the majority of accidents occur in the first two weeks of ownership. In fact, that first ride can be a killer, literally, so be careful!

Learn to manuever sitting on the seat as well as standing on the pegs (slowly at first, please), and you'll develop some good accident-avoidance techniques that might save you in the future -- it's a jungle (of predatory cars, trucks and busses) out there. Good luck!
I'd go with a kawasaki ninja 250 or a buell blast. Both are small cheap bikes with low seats which are also low on power.
Good luck and have fun.

You are doing exactly what I did. I currently have a Buell Blast to learn on and it's great for commuting and great to start on and you can buy one new for $4995.00 which is cheap for a new bike. It's also lower to the ground so, if you are short, like me you can touch flat footed with no problem. It's also a lighter bike and they use it to teach you on at Harley.
Try any of the following. Before you decide, sit on a few and see if it fits you.

Kawasaki Ninja 250 or 500

Suzuki GS550

Honda Nighthawk 250
Honda Rebel 250

They should all be pretty cheap used and cheap on insurance but are all freeway legal and good learner bikes.
I would go with a Honda Shadow vlx.It has a 583cc v-twin and you can pick one up for about $5500 brand new.Just enough power for highway use and its easy to ride.
Ride on one before,good bike.
Can't go far wrong with a Ninja 250. I had mine for a year to learn, and I'm selling it today to a recent MSF grad.
