My hamstring muscle has been in extreme pain for 3 days. Can this be more than just a "sore muscle"?



I took a 1 hour tour of Heart Castle which had a lot of stairs and the next day I rode my bike for 1 hour. I have not done these activities for over a year. Could I have "pulled" a muscle? Any advice for the pain?

In very severe hamstring strains, severe Grade III injuries, the hamstring muscle can completely rupture, and may require surgery to repair the torn ends of the muscle. If the pain is significant, or if the symptoms do not steadily resolve, medical evaluation should be obtained.
It is probably a muscle spasm... there are stretches that you can learn to do to help stretch it out. It is really common. Talk to your doctor- he may recommend some physical therapy for you. Until then, try warm compresses to the area and take an ibuprofen.
I had the same(or similar) thing. I asked about help for it and someone gave me directions for a great stretch. Lie on your back with legs straight/flat on floor. Holding ends of a towel wrapped under foot for support or with friend's help, lift affected leg straight up and toward your body, gently. This helped me out with a persistent pulled hamstring. Heating pads may help pain along with ibuprofen or tylenol.
from my experience from working out i have noticed that sore muscles do not hurt in the same way as pulled or strained muscles. Try doing an exercise with that muscle if it feels weak but has full range of motion then it is probably just sore. however if you consistently feel sharp pain when the muscle is stretched to a certain point it is probably strained.
sounds like you over did it to me, for pain just regular tylenol and elavate as often as possible, hot bath and some times ice, but it will take a few more days...
