How much does a bike repair cost?

Basic problems- Flat tire, and the string that changes gear snapped.

Basic problems- Flat tire, metal string gear changer snapped.

By "metal string gear changer" I assume you mean one of your derailer cables snapped.

Around here, a new derailer cable will cost roughly $2-$10-- but if you need someone to also install it for you also, that runs about $30.

A tube will cost $4-$8, depending on tire size, however if you need to also have someone at the bike shop put the tube on for you, then it will cost you $20--which is the minimum for doing repair work, even though it takes less than 2 minutes to swap out a tube.

Myself personally? I ride a road bike with those skinny little tires on limestone trails so I get a lot of flats and go through a LOT of tubes--on one really nasty trail with a lot of thorns I ended up with 3 flats in 1 day! But I fix my own flats on the trails by always keeping a small bag under the seat that holds an extra tube, patch kit, CO2 cartridges (that pump up tires in seconds) and a "multitool" for most simple spot repairs.

Even if you have lots of money and don't mind paying someone else to do your repairs for you, you should learn how to do them yourself anyway and carry a repair kit with you-- if for no other reason than to avoid being stranded with a flat tire, miles from home or a bicycle repair shop! Once you learn the basics, you can either fix or repair most problems, at least well enough to get you back home or to a repair shop.

And you don't even NEED to buy a maintenance manual--you can always just go on Sheldon Brown's, or a number of other websites and find detailed instructions that cover just about everything--free!

Best of luck!

you can get a tier for $20
and for the gear wire 10

You should be able to do these repairs yourself with a DIY book from the library.Uh, "string"?? I hope it was a metal cable, and not a piece of string.

About $40 if prices around you are like mine. A new cable and tube would run $10 if you did it yourself.

New Tube $4.
New Cable $6-7
Bicycle maintenance book $15.
Do it yourself, Priceless.

a FLAT? lol u can do that yourself! and you can get the other problem fixed for atleast $10..

Listen to the M R dude. He's the smartest bike guy here and he's right again.
