Fuel injection or a carburator on a cruser? |
Am debating whether i should get a bike with fuel injection or carbs. I plan to put some aftermarket pipes on and i heard on a carbs you only spend about 80 bucks to rejet the carbs and on a FI you'll spend few hundreds for some kind of a power programmer or something like that. FI costs much more to repair. The only positive thing i heard about the FI is that it starts well when is cold. So can you FI lovers persuade me why should i get a FI bike? And can the carbs lovers tell me few more good reasons why get the carb bike. There is no advantage to carbs... it's old technology. Fuel Injection is so much better that once you own a bike with fuel injection after dealing with one that has carbs you'll hate carbs and never want to go back. Soon all bikes will be injected just like cars and carbs will be a thing of the past. Carbs have to have a bowl that fills with fuel with floats that shutoff the fuel when the bowl is full. If you park your bike for very long the fuel in the bowl leaves residue that make the floats stick and clogges jets making the bike hard to start and run bad until the carbs are removed and cleaned. Draining them before parking it don't help either because the carbs will corrode inside then. Not a problem with injection. Plus with injection there is a noticable increase in throttle response and no choke. You ever notice how a bike with carbs boggs down when you open the throttle while it's cold, a bike with FI don't. This is because the amount of fuel that carbs supply to an engine is fixed and is drawn from the bowls by engine vacuum and can only be adjusted by disassembling and changing jets. FI automatically varies the fuel mixture as you ride according to a number of things such as rpm, intake air flow, temp. etc and it's all controlled by a computer so it's very precise and never too rich or lean even with changing conditions such as weather or altitude. So don't let anyone tell you there is any advantage to having carbs, they are old technology and nothing but a disadvantage to any engine. depends on your budget,im a old rider and feelyou can get dependability out of both. one is more costly than the other but the main thing is enjoy the ride.check your pockets and go for it! FI hands down, had both types of bikes. carb sports bike, FI sports bike, and now FI cruiser. Don`t let anyone tell you re-jetting a set of carbs on a bike is easy and cost less, carbs are very hard to tune correctly when re-jetting, you main jet, pilot jets, needle heights, flow levels and other crap like syncing and all of it have to be correctly mixed and match in order for your bike run right. With fuel injection, there are less moving parts and with a power commander it easy to dial everything in. All you do is download the mapping on the web and off you go. One last thing, how often have you heard of problems with injectors breaking on a bike? If you don't do your own wrenching you really should'nt care. it only cost less than $10 to $20 for jets. depends on how many you change and if you need a new needle. the advantages to carb- cheaper. cost to jet. and never usually go bad. just don leave it put up for years with gas in it. and you can easily just pull out the choke when it is cold. fuel injection is OK, you just fire it up and ride and never have to worry about a choke. but it cost hundreds to recalibrate. usually around $300 plus to do the same as a rejet. and it gets dirty like a cab does. same there. and if it ever goes out alot to replace and have reprogramed. and a carb bike you can have set the idle. most fuelies have a higher idle and dont have the lower idle sound. Fuel injection is vastly superior to carburators, no matter what. A jet kit may cost 80 bucks, but how much will it cost to have it put in and set up properly??? I`ve had both and I leave mine pretty much stock. Foe me the biggest difference was the fuel injected bike would always start easier and stay running and would take a lot less time to warm up to where it wouldn`t hesitate . |
