I'm about to buy a 1994 Honda Magna Motorcycle, but it has been in a crash, and had a new tank installed. As a result, there is a problem with the vent line. The guy who replaced the tank said he welded an extra vent port on it, and it worked perfectly for many years, but recently it stalled twice. As soon as he opened the gas tank to check the level, it ran normally again.
Is this a potentially a big issue? A safety issue? Expensive to repair? Should I buy the bike?
I don't even know what a vent tube or vent hose does! The vent tube allows air into the tank to replace the fuel that is being used by the bike. Imagine drinking out of a plastic bottle without letting air into the bottle. The bottle will start to collapse from the vacuum created inside. The motorcycle tank is creating a vacuum because either the vent tube or port is plugged. This vacuum is preventing fuel from flowing to the carbs. Once you open the gas cap the vacuum is broken and gas flows again, hence the bike will run. The gas cap on the bike should be vented, or if not then you need to unplug the vent tube/port. Not hard to do at all. buy a vented gas cap I think u should think twice before buying it. As for what problem it has, I am not very clear. I advise u to get on a site called bikerkiss. There are many motorcycle experts there. I think they willa give u a good advice. |
