Bicycle repair - problem with chain engaging rear wheel on 10 speed bicycle?

I have a bicycle that is about 10 years old and been sitting in the basement all this time. When I turn the pedals and the chain, it doesn't always move the rear wheel, even though the chain is lined up correctly on the sprockets.

Sounds like the freewheel has frozen up on you from sitting. If you have some Liquid Wrench try dripping some into the space between the outside cog and the axel. If no liquid wrench you can also use WD40 in the same area. if these do not free up the freewheel it will need to be replaced at a shop.
Wow, they don't even make 10 speeds any more. LOL

Take it to a shop and get a full tune-up.
Yep, the freewheel pawls are probably gummed up. I'd recommend soaking the whole freewheel body (you'll have to remove it from the hub) in 5w motor oil for a day or so, then let it drain for several hours. That should free it up unless it's damaged inside or rusted too badly. You could try the WD-40 for a quick fix to see if it helps, but you probably know the drawbacks of that stuff. I guess you could try dripping motor oil into the front side of the body while the wheel is lying on its side, but it's best to get the lube in from the backside.
