How do I repair a "loose" phil wood bicycle hub?

I'm a broke collge student who rides my trusty Davidson road bike everywhere. For those of you who know about bikes: I have Phil Wood hubs front & rear. About a week ago the rear hub unexpectedly started to loosen up ( the hub has probobaly 1,00 miles on it???) Anyway, there is visible slack that I have been told is the result of the bearings in the hub wearing out. I know I could take my bike to the shop & have them charge me a months rent to repair. But, I want to know if there is a way I can repair it myself. Is there? I'm totally inexperienced when it comes to hub mechanism & repair.

It sounds like you just need to tighten the bolts in the rear. I don't think it is worn bearings in only 1000 miles.

In the most simple terms, the rear axle is made up of 2 sets of nuts that are tightened against each other; 1 set on the left side, and 1 set on the right side.

I'm guessing that "C" has somehow come loose.

Pull the rear tire off. Remove the skewer. See if you can, by hand, unscrew either side. If you can unscrew it by hand, that's the side that needs to be tightened. Don't tighten it too snug against the bearings or they won't be able to roll. You can tighten the outer nut against the inner nut pretty hard to keep both nuts in place.

If this sounds difficult, take it to a bike shop. Tell them the rear wheel is loose. DO NOT mention bearings. Let them tell you what is actually wrong so they don't take advantage of you.

Don't unscrew both sides off the main axle "K" because it is difficult to get it centered again. Undo 1 side at a time.
Phil Wood will do it for you for $40.

There are several variations on the hub designs that prevent the ability to give you precise instructions here UNLESS you have the Field Servicable type. If this is the case, just stick a 5mm hex wrench into each end of the axle and twist. The axle will come out and you can replace the bearings.

Phil Wood hubs are one of the best hubs on the market. The company supports they product and will make good on the hub if it was new and has only 1,000 mile on it. Contact Phil Wood at www.philwood.com. You will have a reply back within two to three days. Ask them if the warranty work can be done at one of their dealers in your area. This would save the cost of shipping your wheel back to the factory.

Cheers,

Rod
