Are 3-speed bicycles still being made in the U.S.? |
These bikes had transmissions that were inside the rear wheel axle. No gears were exposed to the weather. I understand that there may be types of these bikes that may have up to 7 speeds? Recently bought a l958 3-speed English Humber (well-built bike) but am unable to come up with any repair or maintenance manuals. P.S. It gets great mileage.... There are an incredible variety of gearhub powered bikes. See www.harriscyclery.com for your 3 speed parts and repair directions. There are 3 speed cruisers, 7 speed crusiers, 8 speed crusiers, these all come in a modern look or a retro look with both steel and aluminum available. There are 7 speed mountain bikes, 8 speed mountain bikes, 14 speed mountain bikes, and coming soon, a 9 speed. There are also 8 speed road bikes. None of these have derailleurs at all, and they all have gearhubs like your 3-speed. ;) Yeah, they're still made. Most are comfort bikes (Fuji makes some of these I know), cruisers if you will. Your best shot is to cal lyour local bike shop -- although if they specialize in road bikes, they'll be of little help. However, internal gear bikes still exist and are made. Good luck. Actually they've improved to 7- or 8-speed. Try Breezer Bikes at http://www.breezerbikes.com. Also look at www.rei.com for the Novara commuter bike: http://www.rei.com/online/store/productd... Lots of good stuff out there. |
