I have a 1988 Kawasaki KZ1000 Police Edition Motorcycle? |
The battery will not keep a charge while the bike is running. Can someone tell me what can be wrong and how to repair it? I have an '87 KZ1100, and last summer my stator burned up. cost me about 150 bucks to replace. My point: if you don't have the tools or knowhow to figure it out...find a reputable repair shop. Replacing parts willy nilly can cost $$$. have a load test done on the battery and have the charging system checked to make sure the system output is correct. first have the battery checked under load using a meter (found at most service stations) if the battery is ok-- have a dealer check the voltage regulator for possible defects. be sure all connections are clean and tight. this includes battery- and all wires leading to it and connections to the voltage regulator. hope this helps j.w. Resolve in order of $ magnitude: 1) See previous post on checking connections. 2) If you haven't replaced the battery in a long time, i.e. 3 or 4 years, do it. Motorcycle batteries just don't last as long as car batteries. 2) If the battery is relatively fresh, your alternator is not outputting enough. a) This does not necessarily mean a bad alternator, sometimes you can just replace the brushes and refresh your existing alternator for around $5. b) If you don't want to mess with the brushes, replace the alternator for around $50 to $150. go to a mechanic Quit running around with the sirens and lights going, and get a new bike, the one you are riding is 20 years old! |
