Are there any good, inexpensive motorcycle mechanics in San Antonio, TX? |
I have a 1979 Kawasaki KZ 650 SR that is in great overall shape except that I cant get it started. I had a compression test done but Im not sure if the results were accurate. I would like to get it repaired but I want someone who is fair and honest and knows older bikes. Any ideas? If a bike mechanic is any good they are not going to be inexpensive.I doubt that you will find one that knows what he is doing for less than $50 per hour, and that would be considered inexpensive.Get a good shop manual for your bike and do it yourself,you have to start somewhere. If you have spark,good. The problem is plugged idle jets.Take all 4 carbs. off and clean the idle jets with compressed air and/or a fine needle.Great machine you have. Good luck. PS.make sure you have a fuel filter from the tank to the carbs. Retired Yamaha Tech. I bought a bike brand new from Joe Harrison Motor Sports off I-35, just north of 410. They claim to have one of the best shops in the country. The head mechanic told me that people have brought their bikes in (police bikes included), to have them serviced there. There's a Kawasaki dealership on Pat Booker. They'd be your best bet for parts you can't find at the salvage yards listed below. The Motorcycle Shop on the corner of Austin Highway and Perrin-Beitel that does some maintenance (also one of the few places that has a decent selection of used bikes, though they mostly deal in scooters now *sigh*). ABE's motorcycle shop is on Commerce? on the east side of town. I'm not sure what he charges for repairs. Watch out for him though. He likes to brag that he shoots people he doesn't like, and I wouldn't doubt it. His prices are a little high, but he's got just about every part you'd need. Southeast Cycle Salavage is out on Foster Road. They've got a decent selection of salvage bikes you can get parts from, if you choose to do it yourself. I've used them on an older bike I had for some control parts. You should be able to look these places up in online or paper type phone books. I'd recommend checking these places out personally, as it's always good to know first hand who has what.
