CV-boot repair with bike puncture repair kit good idea?? |
Hello, I have a FWD There is a very small rip in my cv boot (the one closest to the wheel) it is weaping cv boot greese and i was wondering if i could just repair it with a bike innertube puncture repair kit, is this a good idea? also how long could i leave the cv boot alone for as im abit low on cash i cant realy aford to go to a mechanic or to buy the tools + parts to replace it. Thanks Might work for a while. just spend the 20 bucks and buy the universal boot kit that doesnt require you removing the cv shaft. you can get them at napa , advance oreilly etc... The bike patch wont work. It will come off. The better repair would be to clean around the hole good with brake cleaner. Then use silicone gasket maker to cover hole and let it set undisturbed for 24 hrs while it cures. Should hold for a good while, just keep a check on it. no, if there are tears you can see there are more, it is time to replace, on the other hand the damage is done run it till it dies if it ,akes a noise when you turn hard. If no noise get split boot repair kit. this is not a good idea ,because it wont hold ,once all the grease leaves the joint,it will ruin it,and then you,ll be replacing the whole axle in it,,its better to try and do this right the first time, this isn't one of those things that you can get by on,it will have to be repaired right, good luck with it. been a certified mechanic for 37 yrs,and on yahoo since 05-26-06. Fill the boot with fresh grease, then put one of the slip on split repair boots to keep dirt out and the grease in. It should last quite a while if the CV Joint hasn't gone dry and dirt has not yet got into it.. "don't wait until it is too late" |
