What's the best way to repair cracks in large fairings (1987 CBR)?

Hi all. I bought an '87 CBR this summer which I love and have been fixing it up a bit. I want to paint it over the winter, but first I want to try to repair some of the bigger cracks in the fairings, the previous owner (who blamed it on the previous owner) put it down more than once and at least once while the bike was at speed. So I can think of a bunch of ways of gluing and supporting and reinforcing the back of the fairings, but I'd like to know how the people who know what they're doing would repair something like this before I go ahead and make a big mess. What would a pro use? Thanks.

p.s. If anyone says duct tape I will punch you.

the easy way is to use a soldiering iron and epoxy.used the iron on the back side of the plastics to melt it together.then used the epoxy to hold it and smooth it out.on the front if no chips are missing just use a filler primer. sand and paint.if there are chips use (don't laugh) jb weld for plastics (or epoxy instead but does not hold paint as well and harder to sand) the jb weld holds great and is easyer to control and sand.its cheap and will take some time before you get good at it . this worked on my zx7r and countless friends bikes. good luck Source(s): used to work at a body shop for 7yr
If'n it's fiberglass.....you won't believe how EZ that stuff is to work with ! Just get a fiberglass repair kit from yer favorite parts shop.

Pretty sure that isn't fiberglass, and fiberglass resin won't work well on plastic. You can either have it plastic welded, or use a product called Plastex. Plastex will allow you to recreate mounting tabs and such, think Loctite makes it.
Most OEM fairings are ABS.

Go get a plastic welder at Harbour Freight (or similar store). They cost around $25 to $30. The packs of plastic welding rods cost around $6.

You will need an air compressor and a filter so oil can't get into the airstream.

Practice a little on some scraps and then you should be able to plastic weld your own fairings.

My little plastic welder has saved me $1000's (if I had to buy new fairings). And trust me, it's been well used. I have 3 kids and myself who all ride sportbikes....a lot.
you can get a plastic welding kit to nail the bigger pieces together, then the only way would be to skin the inside with fibreglass, better to take off all the plastic crap and throw it away.
