Bianchi campione d'italia 84 - want to repair it?

My sister gave me an old Bianchi bike. I don't know anything about bikes, but I want to be able to ride it. The bike has been sitting outdoors and is rusty and is in pretty bad shape. I figure it needs an overhaul. So I've decided to make it my project to fix this bike. Where/how can I start learning about bikes so that I can work on this? I don't expect to become and expert overnight or anything, but I figure if I start small I can do it....any recommendations?

This is the best place to start your search for bicycle related info. It is a great website for the novice or expert cyclist.

Bike repair is reatively simple. As with any mechanics there are best practices. I could tell you to hit Amazon for repair books, but just google for dozens of repair sites.

Since I was a bike mechanic I already know all the basics. However I own (and ride!) a few high end road and MTB bikes. These have some specialiy parts, carbon and super light parts etc. I check the company's sites and email them if need be for info. on these types of things that have special care instructions. For example: what torque should you set FSA carbon threadless stem bolts.

For general repairs seach for repair sites and book mark several as none seem to have all the info you will want.

Also, if you get stuck ask specific, detailed questions here or in other cycling forums. Sorry not to give a URL or book name but all that is easy to find.
Park bicycle tools has a nice How To site that can aid you in your project.

Good luck!

Bicycle maintenance and repair is not that complex. However, you may want to go to a bike shop and have them take care of a few key things. While it is not complex, bikes do use a number of tools that are unique to bikes and are not cheap to purchase. It may pay in both time and dollars just to have a shop do the work. They may also note thinks that you might miss.

Another option is that bike shops often offer classes in bicycle maintenance and repair. This might be a good route to take. You do the work, you have access to the right tools and someone experienced to check what you are doing. You might even get a break on the parts you need. This would probably cost a bit more than if the shop did it themselves, but the benefit is that you would learn from the experience. Ask around at your local bike shops.
