My '93 Harley has an S&S Super carb which may need cleaning or repair. Anyone know how to do this? |
The bike won't start, but not because of the battery, which I just got late last year. I'm thinking maybe fuel line or carb. Need help like yesterday, with gas being what it is. To paraphrase Smokie Norful, "I need help NOW!!" Look up the S&S web site. They sell rebuild kits for all their carbs, and provide detailed instructions. S&S carbs are picky about the jets you use, and a quick call to S&S will get you alot of help on choosing the right ones from guys who have "been there". These are a different design than mikuni's and kehin's, so don't go tearing down the carb thinking you can treat it just like any other carb. Get the instructions from S&S. Best of luck. remove the float bowl with the carb still on the bike.. look at the gasket it has a tendency to warp this holds the float down..buy a new gasket and a new needle valve , you will see it when you remove the bowl.. .it is very simple carburetor if you are very careful you can just cut the center out of the gasket and fix it that way..as long as the needle valve is good Why not just let the pros at the Harley Dealer handle it. I tried to fix an S&S on my sportster. Ended up making it worse and had to spend the bucks for a new carb. First off, is the carb getting gas? Remove air cleaner, look down carb throat with gas (petcock) on. Twist throttle. accelerator pump SHOULD send a spurt of gas into venturi down throat of carb. (I have an S&S Shorty "G" carb. When cold, I give it 3 twist, then pull up on enrichner). Also, the idle mixture screw is pretty much sticking out in the open, where anyone walking by could turn it to change your idle mixture. Luckily, the idle speed screw is harder to get to, and requires a screwdriver. So check that. I figure, if it's getting gas, and the right amount (set correctly) it either should start, or it's something else. My best suggestion would be for you to go to: www.allexperts.com, and check in the motorcycle section. There are dealerships, etc., that have motorcycle specific mechanics and a list of their qualifications, and they would be the ones I'd look to for any repairs on My Harley. |
