I want to get a motorcycle? |
Never had one before. How can I learn how to get started? I want to learn to ride well and be able to repair my own bike? If you are in the U.S., go to your local Secretary of State office and get information on a motor cycle safety course. all you need is protective riding gear. These course are subsidized by motorcycle registrations (bike plates). This keeps the costs down. The school provides the bikes and skilled instructors will teach you everything from properly getting onto a bike to emergency braking. I've taken this course twice and have no doubt in my mind it has saved my life. The class in my area was taught at a community college on the weekends. It was quite a few years ago, but I think it was around 50 bucks. Half the class in outside and half inside. If you pass, you get a cycle endorsement for your drivers license and a discount with most insurance companys. As far a bike repair, I suggest you start with something reliable that needs very little attention. Good luck, keep the rubber side down and wind in your face. I'm not sure where you are but in Australia there is the "Rider Safe" course which covers the basics before you get your license and I'm sure they could put you on to advanced courses from that point, for maintenance and repairs look for a TAFE course or the like in Motorcycle Mechanics the best way ive found for a new rider is to find an inexpensive used bike. i know in my state they will give you a temporary motorcycle permit (to ride next to another rider). and thats a good way to learn, plus on a used bike as somthing goes wrong on it you can fix it one thing at a time, thats how i learned. Hey good question. I would say if you are kinda nervous about riding, get a simple scooter. I bought my wife a 2005 Honda Metropolitan scooter. its a 50cc scooter that will do 40mph. But its actually classified as a motorcycle. You have to get a regular motorcycle license. So you can take the test on that to get your license and that will get your "foot in the door". Since you have the license you can upgrade to a bigger bike anytime you like. Hope this was helpful!! one more tip: whatever bike or scooter you get, make sure you get a Haynes repair manual for it. Like the movie said, "You'll shoot your eye out" !! If you get one then you will only have 2 days of happiness !!.... the day you bought it and the day you sell it and get rid of it !!! And don't even think of repairing it..!!! Not with your knowledge !! It will have to be repaired by a motorcycle shop and often !! You will not have any riding time because it will be in being fixed all the time ,so you won't be able to learn how to ride !!!! Sorry , but you can't have one !!!!! The E R at the hospital !! |
