Please help me solve the following word problem.?

Someone is training for a bike race. Yesterday he rode at 15 mph and covered the distance in 2 hours and 24 minutes. Today he cut his time by 24 minutes. How fast did he ride?

If you can figure this out, please explain how you got your answer. Thanks.

He rode for 2 hours and 24 min at 15mph so he rode 30 miles in the 2 hours (15x2) and 6 miles in the 24 min (24/60=2/5 2/5 of 15=6) So the total distance is 36 miles.
Take off 24 min and you have 2 hours so he rode 36 miles in 2 hours. 36/2=18 so he was riding at 18mph.

Well if he rode at 15mph for 2 hrs and 24 minutes, and cut it by 24 minutes then he rode for 2 hours the second time. The first time: If he traveled 15 mph then in 2 hours he covered 30 miles now take 24min/60min then he went 0.4 of 15 miles so 0.4 times 15= 6. So 6 + 30=36 so he traveled 36 miles the first time. Now the second time he traveled for 2hrs guessing he traveled the same distance of 36 miles then he traveled 18 miles an hour the second time. Hope you got that.

first you have to figure out how far he traveled based on the info given.
If he is going 15 miles per hour, in two hours you would cover 30 miles. To figure out your 24 minute chunk you have to break up your mph speed to miles per minute. so if you divide 15 by 60, that will give you a value of .25 miles per minute. Multiplying this by 24 minutes you get 6 miles. So the total distance traveled is 36 miles.

Now you know his time was shorter by 24 minutes, so that means he finished in 2 hours. Since you know your distance is 36 miles, and it took him two hours to do, you divide by two to get 18 mph

15mph times 2.4h = 36m
36m divided by 2h= 18mph
answer 18mph
