Racing bicycles often have smooth disk-shaped covers over the spokes of their wheels. Why would this thin wire spokes be a problem fro a fast-moving bicycle? Disturbing the air creates friction. The spokes individually create friction during motion. A smooth disk cover creates less air disturbance and thus less friction, and thus are better for speed. They suck in crosswinds. I don't think that it is just the spokes in the wheel that cause drag. Its the rim and axles that cause considerable drag as well. These wheel covers, i would assume, eliminate considerable drag, or they wouldn't use them. speculation Every thousandth of a second that a bike racer believes he/she can shave off of his/her time is important, and will do whatever is necessary. Sorta like a swimmer shaving his head and body. Really help? Who knows. Perhaps it helps psych up the competitor, and that is worth something. It's for streamlining to cut down wind resistance. Spokes disturb the airflow, creating infintesimal amounts of aerodynamic drag. It's the search for that extra 1/1000th of a second. Same goes for the slick, smooth racing body suits, helmets, and even shoes or shoe shrouds on the pedals. |
