In England what exactly is a grass? |
If at work managers and supervisors or their friends smoke in a no-smoking zone, and if I do they will report me. If i complain that this is unfair, then im grassing them up! If I park my motorbike in the no-parking zone, the estate manager reports my bike to be towed away but if I complain that his friends or people of his own race park their bikes to which he turns a blind eye, then Im grassing them up!If Im tolc not to smoke in AA meeting and if I do the secretry will report me or ban me, but if his friends smoke(he even gives them a cigarette) or people he is scared of or doesnt stop them in case they say HE is a grass, but if I complain that they can smoke but I cant, I will be grassing them up! Is this to do with bullying or pecking order? Only experienced this in England. Are these people who will report me also a 'grass'? Whats going on here? another name for a weed...... a snitch....... a dobber...... a rat. Someone who informs on illegal/dodgy activities to the police, or other authorities a grass is just someone who tells authority's of breaking the rules is basically just a weasel trying to put you off telling people when they break the rules A grass is someone who reports you to the authorities for an indiscretion, usually anonymously. See the verb to 'grass someone up', as in 'he grassed me up, I know it was him what did it.' This putting someone in a quandry thing isn't just British. Years ago when I worked for Commodore, the CEO (one Jack Tramiel) came over from the States to see the new UK warehouse, and in full view of the warehouse manager, sparked up a cigar. What was the manager to do? If he said nothing, he wasn't doing his job and if he asked the uber-boss to put his cigar out, he risked being fired. In the end, he asked Jack to put the cigar out, and was told 'I own this bl**dy company, which means I do what I like. Now eff off.' Jack was/is American, although originally from somewhere in Europe. What he did was showed off his power, there was no grassing up involved. In principle yes. Anyone who informs on someone else is technically a grass. There is a large amount of bullying and status involved with grassing on someone. There is also the element of fear. The grass' themselves hope they will be overlooked for their wrong doings if they inform on someone else. There are 2 schools of thought (that I am aware of) as to the origins of the term grass. 1. Meaning that someone is a "snake in the grass". which has been a metaphor for a deceitful, untrustworthy person since biblical times. 2. Cockney (London, England) rhyming slang. This is the use of rhyming words to disguise the words actually meant. i.e Apples and pears (Stairs), Tea Leaf (Thief). With this in mind the term grass could be a shortened version of Grasshopper (shopper) meaning one who "shops," or sells, information to the police. |
