2 stroke smoke? |
anyone have a recomendation for an oil brand or premix ratio that eliminates or reduces 2 stroke smoke? my bike is a 2006 yz125. i am currently using yama-lube 30:1 ratio. i know it is rich, but it is the break in fuel. also what is your take on race gas like Trick or VP? mix race gas and premium 50/50 and then the oil? or run straight race gas premix? thanks a bunch. When Yamaha put that little sticker on the rear fender suggesting a 32:1 ratio keep in mind that was done as much by their lawyers as their engineers. By 'overdosing' in oil they feel they have covered their butts. But 32:1 is extremely rich for a modern day liquid cooled bike. The thinking behind running the first tank rich for 'break-in' goes back two decades and frankly does not apply anymore. You can do it, but it isn't necessary and could be more harmful than helpful in the long run. Two reasons; One, oil molecules are larger than fuel molecules, it takes more physical room for the oil to get through than the fuel. Unless you re-jet, by running a richer mixture you *could* actually be running leaner than richer! Two, any excessive oil that is not burned in the combustion process will inevitably end up in the silencer packing, soaking it. At that point it's going to smoke regardless of the mixture and packing life will be severely shortened. Whether or not Yamalube is a good oil or not is not the real question. Yamaha is obviously not in the oil business. So any oils or lubes under the Yamaha name are made by someone else. So, what kind of oil is it? We know that they don't offer a full synthetic oil, as the Yamalube R is only a semi synthetic. By law, the oil only has to contain 10% snthetics in order to be classified as a semi synthetic, so again, what is it, and how is it formulated? Don't count on consistantcy either, when the current contract is up with the particular vendor, who will get it next and what will it be? By going with a well know aftemarket oil specific company your going to get more consistantcy. You can also get a pure synthetic, which is far and away the best protecting and cleanest burning oil made. Why would you use anything else? Also, by using a pure synthetic oil you can lean your mixture out and still get great protection. I've been mixing fuel for my son's and my race bikes at 50:1 for years with no problems what so ever. Race fuels are something that folks get emotional over. The only real reason for using it is consistancy. But you have to be careful that what your buying is fresh. As fuel is stored it loses octane points. The older it is, the more temperture variances it is exposed to, the more heat is exposed to, the greater the loss. any performance gains afforded by the fuel is done because you can, and have to run richer jetting with it. Not re-jetting for race fuel and just pouring in the tank is a huge waste of money. To me the differance between race gas and high test pump gas is so slight as to not make it worth the differance in money. High compression conditions, extreme spark advaces, huge loads dumped on the engine all at once, OK. Maybe. The average rider in the woods or race track? I don't see it. We've been using Amoco's high test unleaded for years. You can easily tell if the fuel is contamonated at the pump as it is clear. Also, because it's clear, when you mix your oil in it, the fuel takes on the color of the oil making it easy to tell if you've added oil already. Good luck! you want the blue smoke. its a two stroke. if it isnt smoking when you run it then its not running right. that is a trademark of two stroke motors. Try maxima oil 40:1 with straight premimum gas, unless your really fast mix a gallon of vp 110 with 4 gallons of premimum. The Yama-lube is known to be a "dirty" oil. Try the Bel-Ray Bio-Bel H1R synthetic. I've never tried race gas but I think it would shorten your engine life a bit. Dude, I tried responding to your email but it failed delivery. On the pipe question. I would go with the FMF "fatty" with "The Q" silencer. http://www.fmfracing.com/products/catalo... Pro Circuit does make a good pipe as well. Keep on rockin' extra smoke now is from the break in....this will get better once it is broken in. the mixture is a little rich..I would go out. ride it through a complete gas tank, then change the oil to higher mixture 32:1 or even 34:1 Vp is what i always used down at st.helens and elsinore.. but it's kind of a personal choice and also what they offer at the local shops. i had a 2004 YZ250 stick with yama-lube. it is literally going to be the best for your motor.. if you have to change use maxxis.. You dont need race gas. Try switching to a synthetic 2 stroke oil Yama-lube is good, but Spectro makes a "smoke free" premix (for indoor competition) that is excellent. I once mixed it double heavy by accident because I didn't realize that it was smokeless and I thought that my husband had forgotten to add premix(amazingly it still didn't foul the plugs too much) I really like VP Red. You can run it straigh or split it with your usual gas to save money. If you intend to split it 50/50 do not try it straight, you'll be sorry and not want to mix it after feeling the difference. On the track use it straight, on the street mix it to save $$$. |
