Iam going to buy a motocrosser but want to know are they difficult to maintain for some1 with no experience?Tx

I think Iam going to purchase a 125cc.I dont really want it for racing, just to mess around with on the farm. Iam looking at motocrossers over other bikes as I know they are quick and fun to ride.Any help would be great, Thanks!

You definitely Don't want a two stroke. something like a Honda 150 four stroke or a Yamaha TT-R125 would be great. IF you are thinking about racing in the future, the new HONDA CRF150R is awesome. It's expensive, m.s.r.p. of $4,199, but it's really fast and dependable. best of luck to ya!
I agree in part with NISMO. The 4-strokes are great bikes but I disagree that they are easier to maintain than a 2-stroke. I had a yz250 2 stroke and now have a yz450f 4 stroke. The 2 stroke needed piston and rings frequently but I race with it and doing a top end is easy. My 4-stroke does not need top ends but does require valve adjustments which are tricky to do and fairly expensive when done by a reputable shop. Bear in mind that these are racing bikes and are raced hard..if you are plinking around on the farm you wont need to be as diligent with those big repairs, just normal maintenance like oil changes, chain tightening, cable lubing etc.etc. If you ever do plan on racing you should forget about a 2-stroke as the 4-strokes thrash them in competition. As NISMO suggested the Honda CRF150 should be at the top of your list of possibilities.
I RACE THEREFORE I AM
For trail stuff, you wont want the CRF. They make their power up high, and are high reving motors so low end torque kinda lacks. Plus the CRF piston isn't very tall, just enough for the rings, it requires frequent ring jobs.

I think you would be happy with an XR instead
I suggest a honda crf 250x. It's a really good bike, and if you get an offroading bike vs a moto bike, you'll have electric start and headlight, which is really nice. As for maintaince you can't neglect a bike, you regularly need to change transmission oil, valve adjustments, air filter, stuff like that. The manual the bike comes with will tell you what and how though, once you do it once it's easy after that.
I would recommend a 2-stroke for sure based on your question. A 2-stroke, you can work on yourself by just reading the book. A 4-stroke is much more difficult and costly when you figure in valves and mechanic costs.

Don't get me wrong 4-strokes rock and are easier to ride for the newb and they will be the future in riding, due to emmision regulations.

If you want to just putt around maybe the 4-stroke would be best but you specified the maintenance and that goes to the 2-stroke. The engine are easy to work on , anyone can do it.
