Why take it out on motorsports? |
I can understand the green movement and its aims, and agree with encouraging the use of alternatative fuels in areas where it doesn't make a difference where the power comes from. But why are they also taking it out on motorsports? Clearly motorsports never had and never will have a notable effect compared to industry and traffic. A couple of people racing for a few hours on weekends just don't make an impact. There are even events where you can't enter two-strokes anymore. At some races a friend has to tell his daughters, aged 5 and 7, that they can't compete because their bikes are two-strokes! And he doesn't have the money to just go out and buy different ones. So why don't the environmentalists concentrate on the real polluters, reducing gas usage where there are equivalent alternatives, and stop bothering motorsports, where the engine noise and the smell of fresh exhaust are just important parts of the fun and fascination? I've never actually heard any one "taking it out" on motorsports. But if I were to guess, I'd say it is because they consider motorsports to be needlessly consuming a finite resource at the expense of the environment for purely recreation purposes. Many environmentalists think that our cultural values need to change for us to make real progress on energy consumption (hence pollution, environmental change, etc...) So they target motor sports because it makes big engines and driving fast cool. If environmentalists were successful in making it not cool, then people might drive less. But seriously, I've never actually heard or read anyone take that position. My young friend~Misery loves company,They tried to stop the dirt track motorcycle racing too but it never happened. When they give up their SUV's then maybe I'll do something different. Right now I'm gonna continue to ride my Hog and drive my Truck! PS & shoot my guns! I have to agree with you a bit. It used to make me laugh at the indoor monster truck rally's when they would make the announcement at the Kingdome that there is no smoking ... then the trucks start up and you can't see infront of your face frome the exhaust! But I understand the enviormentalists side to- gas engines used on motorcycles and atv are some of the worst polluting engines I have ever seen...what needs to happen is the industry should find better ways for their noise and exhaust. Because we live in a police state mentality, its better to do it before you are forced I don't want to rain on your parade, and I can understand fun is fun, but let me play devils advocate for the moment. A. Environmentalists DO go after industry and traffic, as they are huge contributors to pollution. B. However, industry to some degree is needed to give people jobs and provide others with goods and services. Traffic will exist to some degree as people will always need to get around. Motor sports, as a consumer of nonrenewable resources and a contributor to pollution, are in reality, completely unnecessary. Yes it's fun to do and watch, but society won't crumble with the loss of monster trucks. It's like living on a budget. If you've only got $1000 dollars a month, and you have to feed your kids, you don't cut the food, and rent money until after you've stopped paying $60 for cable. So enjoy your motor sports, because everyone has something that they do for fun that isn't the most green thing ever, but just realize that there are some legitimate reasons for the environmentalist argument. Remind them of the contributions of racetrack technology. Alternate fuel technology. Pneumatic tires. Fuel injection. Passenger restraint. Suspension breakthroughs. Lubrication technology. Ignition technology. Aerodynamic technology. All of these things have more than made up for the small amount of fuel that the racing industry uses compared to what they have contributed to automobile efficiency and safety. I don't think they should take it out on motorsports either. personal view |
