How to take an emergency brake off a bike.....if at all possible?

yeah cause i like to pump the bike when im riding, and sometimes when i do thatwhen u are in a standing postion on the bike just standing not pedaling i kick in the emergency brake. and because of inertia i keep going and results in injury so yeah. and please people lets be serious when answering

u know when u pedal backwards it completely stops the bike automaticly...

Your bike has "Coaster Brakes", which are activated by pedaling backwards.
They are not called "emergency brakes".

What you want is "hand brakes" , which are activated by squeezing the levers on the handlebars.
When you pedal backwards with hand-brakes, the pedals just spin backwards, and don't slow the bike down.

There are several types of hand-brakes, which have cables running from the handlebar levers to the brakes.
There are disk brakes, Vee-brakes, and caliper brakes.
You will most likely have to out-fit your bike with caliper brakes, on account the Vee-brakes and disk brakes require a mounting stud be welded to the frame.

Also, you have to get a new rear wheel, one with a freewheel (gear) , so the pedals can spin backwards. (it's like a ratchet) .

Unfortunately, these modifications will probably cost more than your bike is worth, so I recommend that you get a new bike.

Sounds like your bike has foot brakes, also called a "drum brake"....? If so, you're kinda stuck with it unless you want to take it in to a shop and have them disable it...but then you might be without brakes altogether unless your frame has mounts where you could put on some calipers.

Hope this helps some....

EDIT: Mirage, yes, coaster brake is the usual term. I've often heard them called drum brakes, though, and that's what they were introduced to me as. They do in fact act much like a drum brake as the curved pads press against the braking surface. And they can be disabled....I don't know about his, since there are several types out there, and I'm no expert on them by any means, but a shop in Kettering, Ohio disabled one by removing the pads and spring on one. I watched them do it. ?? Anyway, it's just a suggestion to help answer his question and possibly keep him from having to buy a new wheel or a whole bike. Can't hurt.

That brake is not called a drum brake (sorry Urban)... it is a coaster brake.

No, a coaster brake can't be removed or disabled unless you get a new rear wheel. Then you'll also have to add a rear caliper brake, lever, and cable.

Didn't know they had 'em .
