Vaseline on a bike? Just curious...?

Is it possible to use it as a lube on parts such as the seat post, cranks, pedals etc? Not on the chain but on parts that need to be lubercated. Would it work/be safe to do?

I don't even get this. Greases from Wal mart or the auto store are so dang cheap why even think about it? Vaseline is 4x as costly as the right stuff. And don't use WD 40 for peat sakes.

Possible? In a technical sense yes. Intelligent? NO. Proper lubricating grease is actually cheaper than Vaseline. Check the price per ounce! Go to the discount auto parts store and buy a tub of Valvoline general purpose grease (for a brand name -- actually any will do -- as long as it is made for bearings).

Man, thats kinky. Don't try this at home.

Don't use either Vaseline or WD-40 on your bike. Use either a bike grease or go to an auto parts store and get some lithium grease.

HTH

NO, IT WOULD MUSS IT ALL UP AND MAKE IT SQUEAK HORRIBLE. JUST USE GREASE.

Ya, it's possible for a temporary fix. I spread Lip-Gloss on an annoying squeaky seat-post and it worked long enough to get me home and keep me from going crazy!

Kimber

I would preffer vaseline over WD-40, but I wouldn't use either. Get some grease for seat post, cranks and pedals. And use some oil or something on the chain.

WD-40 does nothing more than remove whatever grease you would have before, so rather than lubricating the stuff you're removing whatever small lubrication you would have before.

Vaseline could replace grease if there was no grease around. It would be better to use vaseline than no grease at all.

But really you should get some bicycle grease.
Save the Vaseline for your *** if it gets sore.

i wouldnt, i use 3 in 1 oil or wd 40 or automotive lube

Vaseline is highly refined petroleum, so yes, it can be used for many applications. Comparing its price to what you should use is very VERY high so it would be far cheaper to get a tub of white lithium grease and be done with it.

I used to use Vaseline to rebuild internally geared hubs and it worked perfectly.

WD 40

Also, wtf?

I wouldnt see why not, but I would always use something like WD-40.

safe, yes. and I don't see why it wouldn't work as it is a petroleum based product. It may not last as long or penetrate rusted surfaces as well as other purpose made lubricants but it should work just fine
