Mountain bike clipless pedals?

i just got a pair of these things, and they feel like they have some play. is that the way they're supposed to be, so as to allow you to slip out? it was really kinda distracting.

Yes you want and need some play. It allows you to flow a little with the bike as you turn and go through technical areas. Its also nice to move your feet around a little on long rides. But they should not be so loose that your foot comes out to easy. You want them stiff enough so that you stay locked in unless you want out. Play with the adjusting screw to get them just right. Also check your shoes where they lock in to the pedel, if they are badly worn then replace them.

Yup, you slip out. That can be fixed with a pair of soccer cleats with either the strategic cleats removed (unscrewed) or cut down to fit. This is a cheap way to get the similar feel of a pair of cycling cleats without plopping down the 150 bucks.

Most pedals have some float in the fit between the cleat and the pedal.....that's normal and beneficial. Some pedals have adjustable float and/or adjustable tension so that you can customize it to your liking.

If it's really loose, check to be sure that your cleat mounting screws haven't come loose....if they're loose, you may find yourself falling over sideways when you can't unclip! Other than that, some pedals just feel a little sloppier than others.

What kind did you get?

Yes, have nothing more to say- I agree with Ride!Urban and Nunya.
just check the adjusting screw- adjust how you want it. however, really cheap clipless can be really kinda loose which can be disturbing but since I don't know which ones you bought I say it's the adjusting screw (as usual).

Like they are saying you need some play, saves your knees.
