How do I take off a bicycle pedal arm?

Also does anyone have any good bike sites too where it shows the details of bikes?

While a crank puller works fine there is, indeed one other way that I like better. I use self-extracting crank bolts. The cost is 9 to 15 bucks and work great. They also eliminate the need for a special tool. You simply replace standard crank bolts with these. You use a hex wrench to extract your crank as you loosen the crank bolt. It actually works better than a crank extractor.

I think that you are talking about a crank arm.

What you need to do is remove the crank bolts. This will most likely be a 14mm or 15mm bolt that should be removed with the crank bolt wrench, or a new-style bolt that can be removed with an 8mm Allen wrench.

Remove any washers that might sit between the bolt and the crank.

You will most likely need a crank puller. This well help slide the crank off of the splines.

Thread in the crank puller. Start this by hand to make sure you don't cross thread it, and thread it in as far as you can. Get it snug but not too tight with a wrench.

Tighten the push bolt on the puller until it comes into contact with the bottom bracket spindle Continue to tighten the push bolt until the cranks come off the bottom bracket spindle.

I hope that this helps. I left a link for some of the different types of crank pullers.

Good luck

You have to take off the peddle on the opposite side of the sprocket with a wrench 9/16 or a 5/8.Then near the sprocket there will be a big nut. You going to have to use a adjustable wrench to take that off, behind that is a washer that is slides in a groove. Take that out and there will be the ball bearings. Then on the other side you have to do the same thing but you do not have to take that peddle off nest to the sprocket because the peddle arm is all one peace with the sprocket in most cases it is.

What Gravity said.

And check out the Park Tool website "Repair Help" section. They've done an awful lot of work to give GOOD explanations and instructions about bike parts and maintenance. They show the parts and procedures as well as the proper tools to use, all in easy to follow formats with great photos.

With a SPECIAL TOOL made specifically to remove crank arms. NOTHING ELSE WILL WORK!!! You could try a bearing puller, but you'd scratch your cranks. Don't even think about a pry-bar or large screwdriver!

This too should run you less than $20 at a bike shop, or you can have the shop do the work for you. There are certain bicycle tools that are VERY specific to their task, and no conventional tools can do the same job. Crank pullers, headset presses, truing stands- all these are bicycle specific, and using anything else will scratch, gouge or break your bike.
