Can you please explain me the meaning of this English sentence?

"He wore biking shoes, cleated into pedal straps"

The author is describing a cyclist, who's wearing cutoff jeans and biking shoes...but I don't understand the meaning of "cleated into pedal straps"
I have to translate it into Italian...so, you could tell me the equivalent, too or just explain me what this means..
Cheers

These are the earlier, "traditional" version of cleats that were used on cycling shoes for at least 80 years before the advent of "clipless" 'step-in' pedal designs introduced in the 1980's; the first was Look, followed shortly by Time.

Prior to the new designs, serious bicyclists, and especially racers, used pedals with a special clip over the toe and forefoot, with a strap held in place by a slot in the clip where it tightened over the top of the arch of the foot, and slots in the bottom of the pedal. A special cleat with a groove that matched the front edge of the pedal, was bolted to the bottom of the shoes.

When the shoe cleat engaged the front edge of the pedal, once the straps were tightened, the shoes would become very tightly retained on the pedals, keeping the foot firmly attached to the pedals in all riding conditions.

Some bicycle racers still use these for racing on the track. In fact, track racers have sometimes employed a double strap, to assure stronger retention.

Perhaps a picture can convey understanding better than words. If you search for old Coors Classic or pre-1984 Tour de France photos, you will see some examples. Source(s): Decades of experience. Bla-Bla-Bla!I don't know!
maybe strapped locked in locked on the pedals un able to move dont know just guess
I presume the text is quite old - at least pre 70s??

Cyclists used to wear specific cycling shoes, but unlike now they didn't attach to the pedal by a clip. The pedals would have a leather strap around it, to hold your foot on to the pedal (envisage what we now call a 'toe clip'). On a bike, when you are attached to the pedal you are said to be'cleated' in, irrespective of how you are attached.

Hope that helps...????....
My Italian is not good but try

Ha portato i pattini ciclanti, rinforzati nelle cinghie del pedale

"He wore biking shoes, cleated into pedal straps"

Toe straps or toe clips where used to cleat the foot onto the pedals We use "clipless" cleats these days referring to the absence of a clip over the toes. The connection still "clips in" which cases some confusion.

The use of cleats allows the rider to apply force the entire revolution of the cranks. (More power)
there are pedal straps that you put your foot in and it puts your foot in the right place for more power with less effort
