Question on Bicycle's Pedals.? |
Is there any different between road bike, mountain bike and BMX's pedals? Is there a standard size on those screws so that it fit in any kind of cranksets? Is is possible to use a BMX's pedals on mountain bike? Or / And Is is possible to use mountain bike pedals on road bike? Most pedals today are interchangeable as they use the same size threading. The big differences are cleats, each company have there own design ( look, spd, speed-play ) and so on. The other difference that you need to be concerned with is the shoes that you use, not all shoes are compatible with all pedals so when and if you decide to purchase your equipment make sure it's compatible. most modern bicycles use pedals that are 9/16" x 20 threading. You can interchange most of the pedals around, just choose what is comfortable for you. i think they all have the same threading, they just have different styles. BMX pedals are large and flat wereas MTB pedals are slightly smaller (unless you use clipless) and road pedals are very lightweight and usuallly the size of a standard MTB pedal, but the cleats are a different style (ie, Look, Speedplay style instead of typical SPD) All adult bikes, other than a few really cheap dept store bikes, and some of the cheaper BMX and little kids bikes, use a 9/16"-20 thread, as previously mentioned. The most important thing to realize, is that the left pedal is LEFT THREADED! What does this mean? If you try to put the left pedal in the right crankarm, or the right pedal in the left crankarm, and force it in, you will be paying me a lot of money to repair or replace your crankarm! ;-) Be sure you put them in the right side, and ALWAYS apply a dab of grease to the threads on the pedal prior to screwing them in. Other than that, follow the advice already given, and go with what works for you. The Shimano SPD system is probably the most readily available, and has road, mountain, and BMX versions abvailable. I've been a bike wrench for more than 10 years now. Mountain and road bike pedals are interchangeable (9/16" thread) the majority of BMX pedals are !/2" thread so no its not possible i say the majority because it depends on the crank. Alot of my customers like using the mountain down hill style platform even on road bikes (not racing bikes) because they have a large surface area and seem to be more comfortable for them. Wrong again rick...... |
