Rear cog not engaging?

i have a problem with my bike.i ride off ok but problem starts when i stop peddaling and freewheel. When i try to pedal again after coasting the peddals just go around its as though the rear cog is just going round without driving the wheel.
Occassionally it kicks back in again if i keep peddaling but when i free wheel and try to pedal again it just goes round again.can you help

As the other guy said, your freehub is most likely broken.

If it is not a high end wheel, it may be cheaper to just replace the whole wheel. A basic rear wheel should be around $45 to $100, so depending on the cost of labour, and the freehub itself, you may be better off going new.

If it is a freewheel, and not a cassette, it may just be that the freewheel is broken and needs replacing. This would be a heck of a lot cheaper to fix, as you should be able to replace your freewheel for around $20-25.

Either way, might be best to bring it to a bike shop Source(s): work in a bike shop
Sounds to me like your freewheel is busted and not engaging. You're going to need to take it in to have it looked at, but you will probably need to replace. Ouch! Good luck!
As the previous replies have said, you'll have to take it to a bike shop and see what they say. Of course, you can first of all just get a quote from them without necessarily having the job done. At the same time, they will most likely tell you what the actual problem, or at least the remedy, is. So that will already help you getting it sorted out. With the information you've given it's difficult to be specific, because we need to know, first of all, what kind of back wheel you have. This is just a shot in the dark, but if it's a derailleur (a cluster at the back with 4 or 5 or whatever number of sprockets/cogs), it could just be that the chain is not engaging with any of the sprockets. This typically happens when a chain is replaced and the cluster isn't, because the chain and the cluster usually wear down together and should mostly both be replaced at the same time. If this is the case, you'll probably need a new cluster and probably a new chain too. Good luck.
This happened on my mountain bike wheel about a year ago. I could tell when it was going to happen because it was silent when I was coasting. It almost caught me out a few times when I went to pedal and nothing happened.
I took the wheel to a shop. There are pawls that are hinged that ride over ratchet teeth until you push on the pedals. The pawls were gunked up so they didn't stick out far enough to engage the teeth. They took it apart, cleaned and lubed the freewheel mechanism and it now works perfectly. It was a very simple fix.
