When you pedal a bicycle, maximum torque is produced when the pedal sprocket arms are in the horizontal position, and no torque is produced when they are in the vertical position. Explain.

When the pedal sprocket arms are in the horizontal position, the foot applies a force perpendicular to it.(vertically downward) and this is maximum. In other positions the force is inclined at an angle to the sprocket arms. The component ofthe force in the perpendicular direction to the sprocket arms are reduced and becomes zero in vertical position. Torque is measuered only by the perpendicual component of force.
No torque is produced in the vertical position? Are we talking about when you apply pressure to the pedals?
It can only produce torque in the horizontal position.
