Mathematical Puzzles?

Two cyclists are 10 miles apart and pedaling toward each other. One cyclist's rate is 6 miles per hour and hte other's rate is 4 miles per hour. There is also a friendly fly zooming continuously back and forth from one bike to the other. If the fly's rate is 20 miles per hour, how far does the fly fly by the time the cyclists reach each other?

and....

What is the minimum amount it will cost to make five three-link peces of chain into one straight chain, if it costs 2 cents to cut a link and 2 cents to weld a link?

#1: 20 miles. The two cyclists are traveling a total of 10 mph, so it will take them exactly one hour to meet. The fly is traveling at 20 mph, so he will fly 20 miles in that hour.

#2: 12 cents. Take one of the three-link pieces (let's call it group A), cut each of those three links (6 cents), then weld piece A1 between groups B and C (2 cents), A2 between C and D (2 cents), and A3 between D and E (2 cents). Voila!
20 miles and 16 cents
is that right? i'm not sure i understood the question correctly
if you can, please send me the answers
Sorry, I can't answer your first question right away cos my brain had not had its caffeine boost yet.
But for your second question, my answer is 12 cents.
Cut all 3 links in one of the 3-link piece and use the 3 cut links to join the remaining 4 pieces together...

Hope it helps :)

Oh now I have the answer for the first question... 20 miles.
In 1 hour, the 2 cyclists would had met each other and since the speed of the fly is 20 miles per hour, it would have flown 20 miles.
Am I right?
The first one is simple but a little bit tricky,
here is my short cut method, first add both speeds
6+4=10miles per hour
then divide it from the total distance
10mi/10mph=1hour
that makes the fly fly for an hour so that the total distance traveled by the fly is
20mph*1hour=20miles! n_n
