Do racing bikes have gears? |
I was watching the Tour de France recently and could not see whether they had gears or not. It seems as if you would need them, but the television coverage focuses on the riders, not their pedals, so I can't tell. I dont want to Patronize you but your not looking for the old style downtube gear levers are you? Racing bikes now, have their gears operated by a paddle behind the brake lever and the brake lever is used to downshift. Most of the racers on the TdF use 20 speeds (2 chainrings and 10 sprockets on a rear cassette) There are always electronic prototypes about but the majority use what I described above. (Be they Shimano, Campy or SRAM). Hope this helps mate. yes they do Yes. Most if not all of the riders have bikes with 20 different speeds, 2 in front times 10 in back. They use different gears (or even different bikes) in hilly stages (lower gears) or in time trial stages (higher gears) than on flat stages like we saw this week. Yes, they do. It's hard for the cameras to pick up as the bikes are flying by. Yes they do. The Chain rings in front are larger than on the normal bicycle you buy at a store. The sprockets on the back are a lot smaller than the street models too. The guys have powerful legs and don't need the giant sissy size sprockets that we have on the rear wheels of our bicycles. No, They go up hill with a 54 / 12 ............. no problem :) They do. The reason you can't see them is that on most of the bikes (not all) there have the brake lines tucked inside the bike to reduce wind resistance, especially on the Time Trial bikes. They also have computerized shifters (some of them) that are much smaller then the shifters us normal people use. |
