Why do you shift to a lower gear to pedal a multispeed bicycle uphill? do you save energy in doing so?

yes, you do. what happens is that the bike chain monvese to a different gear on the set.
it helps you put more power or force behind each pedal...i doubt you save any energy though...riding a bike uphill can be very strenuous...
No, the energy is the same, there just isnt as much resistance on your legs, meaning you dont have to push as hard, you just have to pedal faster to achieve the same result.
so you dont loose momentum
To increase your leverage on the wheels. In a lower gear, the pedals have to turn further to cover a given distance. This means, in effect, flattening the gradient a bit.
Its the same as the pulley principle. You dont save energy. the point here is: YOU'RE STILL LIFTING THE SAME THING...YOUR BIG ***!!!! When you shift gear, you dont become lighter...your weight is constant. The effort is less however.

less effort but you'll do more pedals
greater effort but you'll do less pedals
Try it yourself and count the difference.......hehehe
