Can I fix this road bicycle problem? |
While riding my road bike, the other day, all of a sudden, I noticed that everytime I coasted, and then continued pedaling, there was no torque or resistance until after at least half of a pedal turn. My bike did ride properly before this happened. Then I went home and flipped it over to test it, and when I turned the pedals and then stopped the pedals and let it freewheel, the chain began to slack. So when I turned the pedals again, they went about half turn before the chain was not slacked and I could feel the resistance. I also tested it by turning the pedals backwards and the chain would become very slack. Normally turning the pedals backward on a freewheel bike would not do this, so I would appreciate it if anybody knows what the problem is and how I can fix it. Thanks. These are symptoms of a gunked-up freehub or freewheel. Basically, it needs a good cleaning and lube. This is not something I recommend you do yourself based on the question. It's simple for a bike mechanic, ask if you can watch and learn. Should be a low-cost job, assuming nothing else is broken or messed up. Scott Sounds like the back tire is not positioned in it's groove properly. It may also not be snug. Your freehub is blown - or, if it's a freewheel, then the freewheel is blown... Better than 8speed - and some 7speed, freehub. Less than 7 speeds, a freewheel. Looks like your going to need to replace some parts! Bike Shop Manager Try this link it covers servicing freewheels. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/freewheels.h... You will need the tools. If you haven't got them The bike shop will. If your a tinkerer you will buy the tools (and a few parts) if not the bike shop will fix it for you. ( probably a similar cost) |
