Help! Why does my bicycle gears shift by itself? |
I bought this bicycle with 18 speeds about a year ago. I didn't ride it much, but recently i've noticed that when I start pedalling harder, the gear sometimes shifts to a higher gear without me adjusting it. I tried adjusting the screws on the speed changer thing, but nothing improved. Is there something wrong? Any help is appreciated :D As said before, if you are not comfortable, or don't want to do the adjustment, bring it to a bike shop... If you want to learn how to do it, there is only one way, and that is to try! It is your rear derailler that needs ajusting. Derailler adjustments are best done as a process... so here we go: 1. shift to the highest gear (smallest), and release the cable tension by loosening the screw that clamps the cable. There are two adjusting dials (barrel adjusters) - one on the derailler, one on the shifter (on the handebars). Screw the one on the handlebars in, and the other almost all the way in. 2. pull the cable hand tight, and fasten it with the screw. 3. try and shift one gear lower. if it wont go, unscrew the rear barrel adjuster until it does. Keep doing this through the gears. Try and shift back up. If it wont go, screw in the adjuster. 4. If it isn't shifting smoothly in both directions, you either need to replace your cable and housing or something called the derailler hanger may be bent - either way bring it into a shop. good luck. Source(s): work in a bike shop they made it like that and umm like unscrewd the bolt for shifting Your rear derailleur is out of adjustment and needs to be tightened up. If you aren't familiar with bike maintenance take it to your local bike shop. It's not a difficult repair but trying to fix it yourself could make matters worse if you don't know what you're doing. |
