I saw a TV advertisement this morning for Capri Sun. These kids were riding these pedal vehicles that had one big wheel and the rider rode inside it. They didn't show it for very long as it wasn't the thing being advertised. I recycle old bikes and build custom bikes as a hobby and am very interested in HPV's and I'm curious about this vehicle. Anybody know what it is called? The device is called a monocycle (also monowheel).. Those things are not very practical though-- They are difficult to steer and difficult to balance, with the added danger of "gerbiling" (i.e. the person inside starts rotating instead of the wheel!) if you apply power or brake too rapidly. Not as easy as General Grievous made it look in Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sithies (which was of course, all CGI). :-D It's called CGI, as in computer generated imagery meant to look cool and sell product. There are motorized versions of what you saw, but nothing human powered. It would be too cumbersome, heavy, expensive, hard to maintain, impractical, and unrideable.
