Bicycle gears?

When my hubby had to change gear on his 3 speed sturmey archer gears he used to pedal backwards as it was easier to change gear that way,now he has a new bike with 18 speed shimano gears he has been told only to change gear when he is pedaling forward ,can someone tell him why this is

they are different types of gear, the shimano gears are derailleur gears and if you pedal backwards the chain will come off.the sturmey archer gear was a hub gear and changed easier if you stopped pedalling or pedalled backwards
pedaling backwards to change gears will lead to the chain coming off...

bikes are not designed to have you pedal backwards, since you usually can't go in reverse anyway

you need to be able to change gears while continuously rolling and pedaling forward (otherwise you lose forward momentum)
would you drive a car that you had to stop in order to shift??
Sturmey Archer gears use a completely different system to Shimano gears. These only work if you're pedalling forward, otherwise the chain will come off or jam.
Because now that he is older it would be too complicated for him.

Buy a tandem and stick him at the back!
Hi,
Because the derailleur gear relies on forward motion of the chain to shift from one cog to another, by movement of the rear derailleur, the pedals have to be rotated forward.

Sturmey Archer 3-speed hubs were actually very small planetary gear transmissions, and did not usually require any pedaling to change gears. Modern drivetrains rely on a derailleur dictating which gear is lined up with the chain depending on which gear is selected. To change from one cog to another, the gears have to turn forward to allow the chain to transfer between them.
