Treading Water Wrong?



i need some tips of treading water. when i tread water, i rotate my arms up and down and with my feet, i act like im pedaling a bicycle. unfortunately i dont last 2 long and i tire out fast so i need some tips on doing it correctly.

The other answers is correct, in that the best kick to use is the eggbeater kick. You can also use your arms, in what it sounds like you may be trying to do--a skulling, figure-eight motion.

With the arms, your palms should always be facing down. Your hands should be moving in a figure-eight motion, with your arms full in extended away from your body (thus your arms moving figure-eight, following your hands--as if you have a choice)

With the kick--it sounds like you are already trying eggbeater. Your form may just be off. Peddling a bicycle is probably the wrong analogy, though often used. It is similiar, in that you legs work opposite each other (with one kicking and one recovering, like riding a bike). But the movement is NOT same. It is more like climbing a rock wall. Your feet should be pushing down, in a somewhat seated position. Whether you call it a half-breaststroke kick, or a climbing motion, that should be the goal.

And in all-practice will help. The more you tread, the better you'll get, the more relaxed you'll be. Once you get it down--it will not take much to stay afloat--and the most important element to longetivity will be your ability to relax, slow, steady movements, that do not wear you out.

The easiest way to tread water is to egg beater. Water polo players use it to stay above the water and elevate to the ball. The best way to learn is to sit down in a chair. Spread your knees apart from each other. Take your right leg and make counterclock-wise circles while sitting down. Then, take your left leg and make clock-wise circles as well. Your legs should alternate: one foot should always be in the middle, and one on the outside. When you have the motion down, try it in the pool. It will take awhile to get used to, but it will become easy soon. Check out videos on google for an example by searching "water polo eggbeater".

For your arms now: Make a 90 degree angle with your elbow, with your hands face down in front of you. Then, move your hands side-to-side simultaneously as if you are spreading butter on bread. Your hands should be in the middle together, then move to their respective sides of the body, and come back to the middle. Hope this helps!

you should extend your arms straight out (can be slightly bent)to the side like you are checking your wing span. with your hands palms down. you should push down with your hands (pushing yourself up as you come up turn your hands sideways while bringing them up (this cuts down on water drag making it easier to bring your hands up for next push down thus expending less energy) this should be done in small circular motion. another tip is to push down when you are breathing out. your lungs are deflated when you breath out making you less boyant and its hard to stay above water like this. when you are breathing in your lungs fill making you more boyant and helps you float as your hands are in the up cycle.

your legs should be straight and you flutter kick them in short motions.

you are better off switching to a diffrent style from time to time like the dog paddle to rest the muscles you are using just to change things up.
