The law of inertia states that no force is required to maintain motion.?

Why ,then, do you have to keep pedaling your bicycle to maintain motion?

Because of friction it slows down your bike. If you were riding your bike on ice which has little friction you would only need to push once and you would go super far, but even that has some friction and you would eventually stop.
Friction.
I might be wrong but I thought it went something like, "If an object is in motion, it will stay in motion until some other force acts upon it." You have kinetic energy (simply put, energy in motion) and, like the last few said, friction is the "other force" that makes it slow/stop.
