Two towns are 100 miles apart. Sally starts pedaling her bicycle from Town A toward Town B at a speed of 12 miles per hour. One hour later, Henry leaves Town A toward Town B at a speed of 10 miles per hour. How far from Town A will the two people meet? I'm going out on a limb and say you meant that Henry leaves Town B to Town A, not vice versa. Question actually works then. With that said, after one hour, Sally is 12 miles away from Town A. Two hours, Sally is 24 miles away, Henry 90. Three hours, Sally is 36 miles away, Henry 80. Four hours, Sally 48, Henry 70 Five hours, Sally 60, Henry 60. So Sally and Henry will be sixty miles away from Town A when they meet up with one another. i'm pretty sure you mean henry is traveling from B to A, if not then they will never meet.. but if i'm right when henry starts they are 88 miles apart therefore they are traveling 22 miles per hours... so it's this simple 88/22 = 4 therefore 4 hours later they meet which means sally has traveled 4*12 = 48 miles and henry has traveled 4*10 = 40 miles good luck Never while they're riding their bikes. Sally leaves earlier and she is traveling at a faster rate than Henry. So Henry has no chance of catching up to Sally until she stops at Town B. they won't, since they are going in the same direction, however, if Henry is leaving B towards A then : distance from A = 12+12*(100-12)/(12+10)=12+12*8... let t be the time Sally leaves. One hour later, x - 1, is the time Henry leaves. they are both traveling toward each other, they share the distance. 100 = 12t + 10(t-1) 100 = 12t + 10t - 10 110 = 22t t = 5hr x = vt x= 12*5 x = 60mile from town A Noting d = vt then Sally d=12t Henry d=10(t-1) keeping the same time base Require the two distances to equal 100. So 12t + 10(t-1) = 100 Solving leads to 22t = 110 or t= 5 hours Henry and Sally meet 60 miles from town A five hours after Sally started riding. I think u made a mistake on the question. henry must be leaving Town B instead of A, then the maths works. 1st hour: Sally has travelled 12 miles, henry has travelled none. 2nd hour: Sally has travelled 24 miles, henry has travelled 10. 3rd hour: Sally has travelled 36 miles, henry has travelled 20 4th hour: Sally has travelled 48 miles, henry has travelled 30.. 5th hour: Sally has travelled 60 miles, henry has travelled 40. At this hour they must have met, because 60+40=100 miles Therefore, Henry and Sally met 60 miles away from town A |
