How do I remove a stripped pedal off a crank. One pedal came off easily; the other is not budging.? |
I am trying to remove a stripped pedal off a very expensive bicycle crank. I used a pedal tool and one came off easily; the other got stripped. How do i go about removing the old pedal without damaging the crank? I am desperate. If it is stuck, get some pb blaster http://www.pbblaster.com/store/moreinfo.... at a local auto parts store, spray that on, then put a pipe on the end of your wrench for more leverage and break it loose. Repeat this process if it still won't come loose and give the pb blaster plenty of time to penetrate. Remember that the threads are reversed on the left (righty loosy, lefty tighty): http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto... AND remember to double check the left and right if your bike is upside down and if you are coming at it from the inside instead of the oustide, it'll be reversed. Also, I believe that a propane torch can be used to expand it. Chk out www.mtbr.com forums for stuck pedal. If it is stripped like you say, http://www.instructables.com/id/e9j9s19a... - read thru the comments. Maybe just take it to the bike shop or autoshop would be best and see if you can get them to guarantee the crank if they break it. Oh, that reminds me, if the allen wrench (inside) is stripped, get the tool for the outside or vise versa. one pedal is right handed threads the other will be left handed Unless you put it on stripped, it is not stripped. Here's how to do it easily... 1) Place the crank with the pedal you want to remove stright up- vertical to the ground. 2) Put the wrench on the pedal flats as usual. 3) Hold the wrench (not the pedal or crank) motionless and push FORWARD (like you were trying to pedal forward). This works on both pedals. 27 years in the industry Go with what mirage said it's a good technique, and to clarify what dug's trying to say....the left pedal is reverse threaded, that means you have to turn it RIGHT to loosen it. Good Luck. Former bike mechaninc. |
