Why should motor bikes dont have free-wheel as bicycles.? |
In the bicycle the free-wheel is placed at the rear wheel. it works when no pedaling is required. it disconnects the connection between the chain and the wheel temporarily when not required e.g. on a down slope to reduce the friction loss, and when the road is straight or upslope it reconnects the chain and wheel for transfer of the power from pedal to the rear wheel. Why we dont found the same in motor cycle case? not only do you use the brakes but also engine braking so when slowing down you change down the gears and use the engine to slow you down if you free wheeled this would not happen They do pull in the clutch or shift into neutral. The free wheeling mechanism in bicycles is not up to the challenge of the horsepower applied to the wheel of motorcycles. I've seen them tear up on ten-speeds! Also, engine braking is a good addition to the wheel brakes and would be undone by free-wheeling. From what I understand it's similar to popping the clutch where as soon as the RPM of the driving shaft exceeds the RPM of the driven cylinder (refer to diagram in the source below) a load is very quickly introduced into the system. A liter bike can easily break the best rear tire free around a turn if you goose the throttle, imagine that happening at an unpredictable point around a turn. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/freewheel... |
