What is the largest head start the tortoisecould have been given with out being able to beat the hare?????? |
years after the famous foot race, the hare challenged the tortoise to a rematch on bicycles. hte hare was able to pedal at a rate of 15 miles per hour, while the tortoise could pedal only at a rate of 12 miles per hour. knowing he was slower, the tortoise makes up a lame excuse for being given a 27 - mile head start in the 165 mile race. it will take the hare 11 hours to complete the race and the tortoise 13.75 hours. the hare wins by 40 mins. i got the tortoise finishes in 11.5 hours but ok. and the largest head start: you have to solve this equation 165/15 = (165-x)/12 which basically sayz the time for the hare (165 miles at 15 miles/hr) is equal to the time for the tortoise (distance is 165-x cuz x is the head start and then divided by the speed) 165/5 = (165-x)/4 33 = (165-x)/4 132 = 165-x x = 165-132 x = 33. so if the tortoise had a 33 mile head start, he would tie the hare. if you try it in the equations, u should get the answer. another way u could do it is basically, u know it takes the hare 11 hours. so you can find out how much distance the tortoise can travel in 11 hours by doing 11 hours x 12miles/hr. which is 132. so he can travel only 132 miles in 11 hours, which means if he started 165-132 = 33 miles ahead of the hare, he would tie the hare |
