Why is a bicycle called a pushbike when you pedal it? |
Just a discussion in the pub and no one knew. Its a push bike as opposed to a motor bike - you have to push the pedals on a bicylce, whereas the engine does all the hard work on a motorbike :) well most people i see are pushing their bikes up the road, not actually riding them The rider pushes the pedals. you have to push the pedals to make it go people used to push them to get up a bit of speed and the jump on. The first "bikes" had no pedals and had to be pushed to start moving. Now, of course you push down on the pedals, though with toe clips you can pull up as well. When they were first invented they did not have pedals so they used to use there feet to push themselves along, then they put pedals on one of the wheels then of course they progressed onto whet we have today. so they started off as pushbikes and the name has stuck |
