Easy question.....?

Why do you shift to a lower gear to pedal a multi speed bicycle uphill? do you save energy in doing so?

It is an easy question. You are so right!
Supposedly, but I never thought so, I try it and you just need to pedal faster with less resistance. So either way I think you exert yourself to the same degree.
The higher you go in gears, the harder it is to peddle. This makes it easy for when your going downhill and on flat roads, that way your feet arent going really fast. When your pedaling up hill, the steepness of the hill makes it harder to pedal. So you dont need to change it to a higher gear to make it easer. Going up the hill at a lower speed is giving you the same effect that going on a flat road at a higher speed would.
not a easy question.
