On my multi-speed bike, the freewheel stopped grabbing the wheel, so now the pedals spin freely. Easy to fix? |
Seems like something under the hub would have come apart, but I can't find the solution by internet search. Maybe. They're called "pawls" and depending on the age/ model / condition of the freewheel might not be worth fixing. What happens on old ones is they get gummed up and the pawl springs don't work anymore. Before you replace it, try cleaning it thoroughly with a good strong solvent. It works best if you remove the freewheel from the hub and soak it. Good luck Scott I have had limited success in making freewheels work again by attacking them with WD40.. not the "gear" part, but the body, near the rear axle... you'll see where I mean if you look. This is easiest with the bike laying on its side...spin the rear wheel forward (so if the wheel hit the ground the bike would move forward) and spray very liberally until you hear the pawls start to 'click' again, then drip in a bit of SYNTHETIC motor oil. As a note, you should NEVER use motor oil on any other part of a bicycle, nor for any reason other than to try and restore a freewheel. If after a few minutes of WD40 you have not noticed any improvement then it is time for a new freewheel. One other thing... if you have a cassette and freehub instead of a freewheel, there is no saving it. You'll need to have the freehub body replaced. 27 years in the industry |
